Ethix Merch Joins the Healthy Textiles Coalition

At Ethix Merch, our commitment to ethical, transparent, and sustainable merchandise extends beyond the products we offer. It also encompasses the very systems that create them. That's why we're proud to announce our new membership in the Healthy Textiles Coalition (HTC), a diverse and visionary alliance of nonprofits, businesses, researchers, manufacturers, farmers, and advocates dedicated to transforming the textile industry from the ground up.

Shaping the Future of Responsible Textile Production

The HTC's mission resonates deeply with our values: championing regeneration by prioritizing renewable, compostable, and non-toxic natural fibers, supporting local economies, and promoting transparency and community engagement throughout the supply chain. Their advocacy work aims to dismantle the damaging practices of fast fashion, tackling microplastics, toxic chemicals, and overproduction that harm people and the planet alike.

"Ethix Merch believes that a responsible apparel industry promotes a thriving workforce and a sustainable planet. The Healthy Textiles Coalition is pushing the industry to move beyond toxic practices and toward systems that are truly regenerative and just - and we're proud to be part of that effort." Daniel Cardozo, Ethix Merch CEO

In 2024, we proudly endorsed SB 707, the Responsible Textile Recovery Act, the first law of its kind to hold producers accountable for the full lifecycle of their products and reduce the enormous environmental and social harm caused by textile waste. Thanks to the efforts of a broad coalition, including ours, SB 707 has passed, and California is now moving into the critical implementation phase.

Critical Guidance for Current Legislation

As a coalition member, we recently co-signed a detailed letter to California's CalRecycle urging a strong, transparent, and just implementation of SB 707. This letter, grounded in the values and goals we share with the HTC, offers critical guidance to ensure the law's promises become a reality.

The letter emphasizes that passing SB 707 was only the first step. Now, success depends on regulations that:

  • Ensure robust data collection and public transparency to understand the environmental and social impacts of textiles clearly.
  • Prioritize natural fiber and regenerative systems over synthetic, plastic-based textiles that contribute to microplastic pollution and health hazards.
  • Require clear labeling on all textiles to inform consumers about plastic content, toxic treatments, and compostability.
  • Establish fair, eco-modulated fees that encourage sustainable production and support regional natural fiber manufacturing while discouraging harmful waste colonialism practices.
  • Demand effective oversight and enforcement to hold producers accountable and direct penalty funds to communities disproportionately impacted by textile waste.

These recommendations align perfectly with the Healthy Textiles Coalition's core values, encompassing the promotion of regeneration and waste reduction, as well as support for local economies and protection of public health. By endorsing SB 707 and now working alongside the HTC to shape its implementation, we are committed to driving real change locally in California, ensuring that sustainable, ethically sourced textiles become the industry standard for the future.

How You Can Support a Sustainable Textile Future

On an individual level, if you are interested in learning more about the plans to implement SB 707, you can follow the California Product Stewardship Council for updates. FibershedCalRecycleTextile Exchange, and, of course, the Healthy Textiles Coalition are all excellent organizations to follow for the latest information on textile sustainability in the US.

If you purchase merchandise for your organization, you have the power to support the well-being of communities and the environment. Consider sourcing products made from ethical, circular materials, and work with us to identify suppliers who align with responsible practices. Choose natural materials for apparel, look for FSC certification for paper products (notebooks, journals, etc.), and ask deeper questions about where your merch materials come from. We work with several local producers who source USA-grown, organic, or recycled cotton, ensuring your shirts are made with natural fibers while supporting local communities, farmers, and workers along the way.

You can also advocate for policies like SB 707, which hold producers accountable for the full lifecycle of the goods they sell. Small choices add up to a more just and sustainable system.

At the national level, keep an eye on the FABRIC Act. The FABRIC Act (Fashioning Accountability and Building Real Institutional Change Act) is a federal bill introduced in the US Senate in May 2022. It aims to protect garment workers, strengthen domestic manufacturing, and encourage ethical and sustainable practices in the fashion industry. You can endorse the bill like we did, call your local legislators, sign their petition, or share information on social media to boost interest in the legislation.

Follow us, or any of the organizations mentioned above, to stay informed about new legislation and developments in responsible sourcing.
